A cloud server is a virtualised server that uses a pooled resource, provided by multiple servers otherwise known as cloud nodes, to provide scalable and flexible computing resources.

Who is it for?

A cloud server is ideal for situations where a website and/or application has fluctuating traffic patterns e.g. growth or seasonality. A cloud server can handle this with relative ease because of the ability to easily and quickly add compute power (RAM and CPU).

What are the benefits?

As cloud server resource (RAM and CPU) can be scaled up and down they are extremely cost effective. During periods where traffic is high, resource can be scaled up, whilst in quieter periods it can be scaled down. This means you only pay for the resources required. Cloud servers also have inbuilt redundancy, meaning they can recover from server hardware related issues.

A dedicated server (also known as bare metal server), is a single physical computer server, connected to the Internet, that is used by an organisation or individual.

Who is it for?

Sites or applications that have a consistent/forecastable level of traffic, that requires a large amount of compute resource (RAM and CPU).

What are the benefits?

Dedicated servers can be specced as required. This means they can have the CPU, RAM and disk drives tailored to the website or application's needs. They are also not shared by any other websites or application and so cannot be affected by what those websites or applications are doing.

A clustered server solution (also known as a load balanced solution / highly available solution), is a group of servers that have been architected to enable load balancing of traffic and/or resilience from hardware issues.

Who is it for?

Sites that need to adapt to and manage large variations in traffic patterns without any degradation of service. As a cluster of servers also typically means multiple servers for each element of the solution (e.g load balancer, web server, database server), they also have the ability to manage hardware issues effectively.

What are the benefits?

Clustered servers can be precisely tailored to an application's requirements. Multiple web servers can readily manage spikes in traffic and so they are perfect for large marketing/social campaigns. They are also ideal for situations where uptime is a priority, as they have the ability to recover from hardware related issues.

We are well aware of the power our servers consume, which is why we only partner with data centre partners that use 100% renewable energy sources and are ISO50001 accredited.

This means we are confident that energy reduction and Power Usage Effectiveness is front and foremost of their business plan and they are committed to a reduction of their carbon footprint.

Our data centre partners adopted the use of 100% renewable energy back in 2013. Their energy reduction measures include Cold Aisle Containment rack layouts, and the implementation of highly efficient UPS systems which run at near unity power factor. These technologies have enabled them to achieve a PUE (Power Usage Effectiveness) of ~1.3.

We ourselves are constantly reviewing our data centre usage in a drive to reduce energy consumption. In 2020, we moved all our existing cloud servers onto a new cloud platform. By doing so, we halved the number of physical servers required, also halving our energy requirements at the same time.
